The vacuum-sealing cap creates an automatic water flow. The rugged handle makes transport around the yard easy, and the jar snaps compactly onto the base.
One reason we have heard that people choose plastic over galvanized steel is because the water is less likely to change in taste as a result of a plastic container. That said, we have seen plenty of chickens drink water from muddy puddles, so it's not clear how sophisticated their pallet actually is!
